Fashion and Surrealism
Designers have decided to extend the fascination of the New Year holidays and make a little bit of magic, wonder, and even madness of fashion. In Spring/Summer collections of 2009, you can find the most unusual things – guns, for example guns instead of heels, English pins instead of the handle of the bag. Fashion returned to surrealism. Surrealism implies a connection or the combined effects of imagery. Surrealism in fashion is a distraction from reality, an opportunity to play with familiar things and present them in a new extraordinary form.

As a direction of fashion, surrealism appeared in art in the 1920-ies.
In the history of the first fashion designers Elsa Schiaparelli was the first who used methods of surrealism in the clothing designing. She became famous and successful in 1930.
Schiaparelli became the founder of this style in fashion and years later, she had a lot of followers.

The Main rival of Schiaparelli is Coco Chanel who has never recognized frivolousness and the carelessness of this style. Now Madame Chanel is unlikely to approved heels-guns that Karl Lagerfeld has released this year under a new name. But Chanel has already been appreciated with the toy type shoes by the fashionable beau monde, and Madonna was one of the first.

As surrealism will always have its own a place in fashion, we cannot say that this is a “classic phenomenon”, but some of the designers will certainly recall the madness of this fashion. And next season a burst of surrealism is expected.
For example Miu Miu offers to drink tea in the shoes with cups handles. Or designers Bodhi increase British pin and attach it to the bag instead of pens. Galliano offers heels of the statues of African women. Some models are just wonderful, like vinyl bags or a bag of poodle-designer Basia Zarzycka.
